Entire lake to ourselves
MORAINE LAKE IN SEQUOIA
Our third day on the High Sierra Trail (HST) ended at Moraine Lake in Sequoia. This small lake was a very cute and delightful lake with its own small island. Surrounded by a wall of tall trees, it sat off the main trail, which may discourage a few hikers to camp here although the extra distance wasn’t much. We had been assured by a couple of park rangers whom we ran into a day earlier that it would be a wonderful lake to camp at. And they were right. Especially when we got there and even till later when we went to bed, no one else was there. We kept the entire lake to ourselves. And it was not cold!!!! What a difference staying at 1,000 feet below Precipice Lake with no wind made! After a quick meal, we settled at the north shore for the sunset. The sun was going down over Big Arroyo Canyon, west of Needham Mountain, while casting its warm light on everything that it touched. Now that we saw Needham Mountain, we knew that the Great Western Divide was way behind us.
