River of our Lady of Mercy
CANYON WHERE MERCED RIVER BEGINS
I looked southeast. The prominent Mt. Clark (Grey Peak to its left), first summited in 1866 by Clarence King and James Gardiner of the US Geological Survey, stood right in front of us. Its peak jutting up into the sky was so unique that I couldn’t miss it. On the other side of the canyon where Merced River (meant River of our Lady of Mercy) flowed, Simmons Peak, Mt. Maclure, Mt. Lyell, Rogers Peak and Mt. Florence rose and created an amazing mountain skyscraper. It was quite jarring to witness the slopes of the burned trees right before us juxtaposed against the astonishing mountain range that stretched as far as my eyes could see. What drew my attention the most though was the canyon where the 145-mile long river began (before reaching San Joaquin River outside of Yosemite National Park). If I take the river up the canyon, way passed Washburn Lake, and then take up Lyell Fork Merced River, I would end up at the bottom of Mt. Ansel Adams! Wonder what the view of Mt. Lyell, Mt. Florence and Rogers Peak is like from there…
