JMT DAY 13 — CLOUDS OVER MARIE LAKE AND BEYOND

Clouds over Marie Lake and beyond

While climbing Selden Pass (10,800’), the amazing view of Marie Lake from the switchbacks constantly stopped me. Part of me wished that I had spent at least a night by the lake, but regrettably it was not in our itinerary.

Once we reached the pass, I dropped my heavy pack and grabbed my camera gear. What the pass offered was not only the beautiful view of the elongated lake but also the spectacular view of tall peaks and ridges rising beyond it. From Recess Peak (12,813′) to Seven Gables (13,100′) to Mt. Gabb (13,741′), the peaks stood tall as an army of clouds gently caressing them while slowly travelling overhead.

It was simply breathtaking in every direction I turned, and I just wanted to explore more. The view of Mt. Hooper (12,349′) had welcomed me from the moment when I first hiked by the outlet of the lake, about 250 feet below the pass. The mountain, which I couldn’t stop looking at from Bear Ridge Trail the day before, now stood to my left. (It’s out of the frame.)

Then, it was time to head down the pass. Sallie Keys Lakes, our destination for the day, was waiting for us.
