DAY 2 — SUNSET NEAR HOLE IN THE WALL

Next morning I left Kelso Dunes and headed to my next stop — Hole in the Wall, which was located on the opposite side of the mountains in the east.

Once I got off the paved roads, the dirt roads that I took went over the mountainous area. Its higher elevation offered some elevated views of the vast landscapes of the preserve.

The Hole in the Wall information center was closed for summer. But potable water was available, so I decided to pick up some water here.

While meandering through the walls and crags of rock formations with jagged points protruding upwards, the loop trail starting from the information center itself is quite short. And, except for this one spot where climbing up or down the pile of giant boulders requires the help of clinging on to the metal rings and chains (think of those chains at Angel’s Landing in Zion), it is a super easy one.

Once done with scouting, I returned to my car and had an early dinner. By the time when I headed back out, the sun had fallen quite a bit. And it was time to chase the sunset.
